Motorcycle route through the Western Axarquía
In the previous post we explain step by step our route through the East Axarquía. On this occasion we will see how the western part of this region develops.
We remind you that these two routes are available for groups or individuals, with and without a guide. As well as in vehicle, if you do not want to travel by motorcycle.
Malaga
We will start with Málaga, capital of the province of the same name. Malaga is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city. Its port receives thousands of tourists every day and thanks to its recent remodeling focused on leisure, you can enjoy a charming walk with shops, restaurants and art museums such as Pompidou.
Its historic center is full of activity and cultural offers. Crowning it is La Alcazaba, a palatial fortress from the Muslim era. To its ladders, the remains of the Roman theater are worthy of mention. These are some of its architectural heritage, but not all, since the entire center of the city hosts many churches and palaces from different eras, as well as its splendid Cathedral.
Natural park of the mountains of Málaga
Once we leave the capital, we will head east and then start climbing through the mountains of Malaga.
The natural park of the mounts of Malaga occupies a great extension to the north of the city. It houses the Guadalmedina River and a wide variety of Mediterranean flora and fauna.
Moclinejo
After a few kilometers of forest we will arrive at Moclinejo, already located within the region of La Axarquía.
Among its narrow and picturesque streets, we can admire many of the characteristic mosaics and tiles that decorate them. Also its church of century XVI and XVII emphasizes by its tower with Arab arcs.
El Borge
This small town is known for its raisins, from which its famous sweet wine is made. Also for being the birthplace of one of the most recognized and feared bandits “El bizco del Borge”.
Benamargosa
As we get closer to Benamargosa, we can admire the typical landscape of this region of the Axarquía. With crops, especially mangos and avocados, covering the slopes of its mountains.
Comares
Known as “The Balcony of the Costa del Sol” for its location perched on the top of a hill. As is to be expected, it offers unbeatable views of the entire valley and the mountains. Comares has a rich heritage in remains of the Arab and Muslim era.
La Viñuela
We started the descent of the mountain and we went to the lake of Viñuela.
This marsh located 230 meters above sea level offers an incomparable landscape surrounded by vegetation and mountains. A must stop to take out the camera.
It also offers many restaurants and hotels around where you can enjoy the best food of the Axarquía.
Vélez-Málaga
It is the capital of the Axarquía. A historic city with a great cultural and baroque and Mudejar architectural heritage. The city was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487, but its Arabic-Andalusian legacy endures among its streets, as is its most significant example: the fortress castle that crowns the city. Also its churches, many of them old mosques, and palaces that make up an old town full of alleys and surprises.
